We are a youth-led initiative that focuses on building relationships and a sense of community through social projects that cater to Muslim youth in Surrey.

Often, Muslim organizations are run by older individuals which often results in a generational disconnect. Muslim youth are rarely in the position to develop and carry out their ideas. They are often directed by adults that may not present them with the opportunity to provide their own input.

Thus, we aim to create a shift. By having a physical space that youth gather to share their thoughts and opinions, we will foster a safe environment where youth can feel comfortable, empowered, and supported. Resulting in events catered to Muslim youth, by Muslim youth.

Our co-ed cohort is composed of 9 high school students between the ages of 15-17. While a few members have been part of Solid State for a few years, many are in the process of establishing their connections. This cohort was initiated after many of us were in search of a space where we could be gathered with like-minded youth and organize our own events and projects. We all have a passion for establishing a sense of togetherness and giving back to the community.

With the growing concerns of Islamophobia and Xenophobia, we recognize that there is a dire need for safe spaces to be formed. Some Muslim youth may feel the need to silence their faith or identity in certain spaces. We want to combat this by developing a supportive environment that is built upon vital Islamic teachings. In this manner, there is no need to choose between fitting in a Western society or following one’s religion. As high school is a difficult point in time where youth are challenged with a variety of issues, we feel that this specific demographic of Muslims requires more support.
